Naveen Pattnaik Biography


Naveen Patnaik was born on 16 October 1946 in Cuttack, Odisha. His father was Biju Patnaik, former Chief Minister of Odisha and mother Gyan Patnaik. He was educated at Doon School and later completed his graduation in Arts from Kirori Mal Mahavidyalaya, Delhi. Naveen Patnaik is also a writer and spent his youth almost away from politics and Odisha. In the year 1997, after the death of his father Naveen Patnaik, he stepped into politics and a year later founded the Biju Janata Dal in the name of his father Biju Patnaik.

The Biju Janata Dal then won the assembly elections and formed the government with the BJP in which he himself became the Chief Minister. He started the 'fight against corruption' and 'pro-poor policies' in his own way. He made his father's dream of development of the state the basis of his development by properly managing the bureaucracy. Similarly, he gained popularity in Odisha and succeeded in becoming the Chief Minister for four consecutive terms with full support. Naveen Patnaik's name holds the record for becoming the longest Chief Minister in the history of Odisha. He is still unmarried.


Politics Career

Naveen Patnaik joined politics in the year 1996 after the death of his father. In the year 1996, he was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha in a by-election to the Aska Assembly Constituency, as a Janata Dal candidate. He was a member of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Steel and Mines and the Standing Committee on Commerce in the Lok Sabha.

In the year 1997, Naveen Patnaik formed Janata Dal and Biju Janata Dal. In the year 2000, he won the assembly elections in Odisha in alliance with the BJP. Naveen Patnaik, who was serving as the Mines Minister in the BJP-led NDA government, resigned from the Union Cabinet and took oath as the Chief Minister of Odisha.

After winning the assembly elections in alliance with the BJP, Naveen Patnaik again assumed the office of Chief Minister in the year 2004. However, in the year 2007 in Kandhamal district there was also communal violence due to his alliance with BJP.

In 2009, the BJD did not form an alliance with the NDA and formed an alliance with the Left parties before the Rajya Sabha elections. The BJD won both the Lok Sabha as well as the assembly elections. The BJD won 14 out of 21 Lok Sabha seats and 103 out of 147 assembly seats.


Chief Minister for the fourth time in a row

Naveen Patnaik broke the record of his father Biju Patnaik as well as established himself as Dr. Harekrishna Mahtab and J.B. Put him ahead of other state leaders like Patnaik. Naveen has been the Chief Minister of Odisha continuously since March 5, 2000. Dr. Mehtab and JB Patnaik served in this post thrice each in the state. Vishwanath Das, Maharaj Krishnachandra Gajapati Narayan Dev, Navkrishna Choudhary, Biju Patnaik, Nandini Satpathy and Hemanand Biswal held the reins of the state twice each. 

Maharaj Rajendra Narayan Singhdeo, Biren Mitra, Sadashiv Tripathi, Binayak Acharya, Neelmani Routre and Girdhar Gamang got the opportunity to become Chief Minister only once. At least 15 leaders have taken oath on 27 occasions to lead Odisha since 1937. Krishna Chandra Gajapati and Vishwanath Das took charge of the state as prime ministers from 1937 to 1944, and 13 others took oath as chief ministers. At present, the Governor of Assam, J.B. Patnaik held the post of Chief Minister of the state for about 12 years. The tenure of this senior Congress leader was also interrupted. For the first time in 1980, he completed only one year. His tenure was also interrupted in the year 1985 and 1995.


Conflict

Some MP MLAs of Patnaik's party BJD are accused of being involved in the chit fund scam and have been interrogated by the CBI in 2014. CBI is probing more than 30 companies in connection with this multi-crore financial scams which have robbed the poor of lakhs of states. His lifetime savings were questioned because of Patnaik's silence on the issue and the proximity of several such businesses, such as the one photographed during the launch of a news channel by such a company.
